Finding Inspiration – Ideas, Style & a Sketchbook Prompt!

Hey there Reader,

Finding Inspiration

Every great pyrography piece starts with an idea—but where do those ideas come from? Whether you’re struggling with creative block or looking to develop your unique artistic voice, this edition of The Burning Line is for you.

  • How I come up with design ideas
  • How to find your own artistic style
  • Sketchbook prompt to spark new ideas

How I Come Up with Design Ideas

Inspiration is everywhere—you just have to train your eye to see it. Some of my favorite ways to spark ideas:

  • Nature Walks – I take photos of interesting textures, trees, and landscapes. I talk a lot of pictures on my hikes for future ideas and reference.
  • Historical & Folk Art – Exploring old carvings, textiles, and patterns for unique details. I am a big Brother Grimm Fan and have used the stories as inspiration.
  • Music & Lyrics – Certain songs create strong imagery that translates well into woodburning. My favorite and perhaps most heartbreaking piece I ever created was of the song “One more light” – it was a very personal creation as I lost a friend to suicide.

A good habit is keeping a “Spark File” in a notes app, a Pinterest board, or a physical notebook where you save ideas, sketches, and reference images.

How to Find Your Own Artistic Style

Developing a personal style takes time, but here’s how you can start:

  • Create Often – The more you burn, the more patterns in your work will emerge. I burn pretty much every day – with the exception on days I hike or have events of course.
  • Notice What Excites You – Do you love fine details? Bold designs? Organic shapes?
  • Experiment with Different Techniques – Try stippling, shading, and different line weights.
  • Limit Your Tools (At First) – Sometimes, restriction forces creativity. Stick to one tip and see how much you can do.

Most importantly, don’t chase someone else’s style—yours will develop naturally through practice and exploration.

Sketchbook Prompt: The Nature Collection

  1. Take a walk or look out your window.
  2. Sketch five organic shapes (leaves, branches, clouds, etc.).
  3. Choose one and refine it into a pyrography-friendly design with outlines and shading ideas.

Try it out and see what new ideas emerge.

What inspires your pyrography? Reply and share—I may feature some of your answers in a future issue of The Burning Line.

Keep creating, keep burning.

Cheers,
