Why Nature is the Best Mirror: Lessons from the Trail

Hey there Reader,

I didn’t grow up with trails. I didn’t grow up with steady roots or safe spaces, or Sunday morning hikes with someone pointing out birdsong and tree bark. The woods came later, as a kind of homecoming I didn’t know I needed.

The first time I set foot on a real trail by myself, I wasn’t looking for answers. I just needed to breathe. Life had gotten too loud. Too many roles. Too many shoulds. Too much giving from a cup that had been dry for years.

But something happened out there.

Nature didn’t ask me to perform.
It didn’t ask me to be strong.
It didn’t ask me to smile when I didn’t feel like it.

Instead, it offered a kind of mirror.

Every gnarled tree and tangled root system had a story. Every winding path reminded me that progress isn’t always straight or pretty. I started to see myself in the forest, in the slow, stubborn growth of lichen on stone, in the way the earth doesn’t apologize for cycles or seasons.

Out there, I remembered how to listen.
Not to podcasts or people.
But to my body. My breath. The crunch beneath my boots.

I learned that solitude isn’t loneliness when it’s chosen.
And that getting lost is sometimes the beginning of finding your way.

When I burn a piece of wood in my studio, I think about those lessons. How each line I carve is a trail of its own. How fire, just like the wilderness, can reveal something essential.

Nature is honest. It won’t flatter you. But it will show you what you’ve been ignoring. It will reflect back who you really are, not who the world keeps telling you to be.

And if you let it, it’ll walk beside you while you figure it out.

Want to Try This?

Next time life feels like too much, take a walk in the woods, no headphones, no agenda. Just breathe. Watch the way light filters through the branches. Notice what pulls your attention. That’s your soul whispering. Listen.

From the Studio

Much of what I create, from wall art to the small things meant to be held, begins with moments like these. If you’ve ever wanted a tangible reminder of your own wildness, of your own strength, you might like this piece inspired by the forest’s quiet truths.
